Concentratie van misdaad in hotspots

De 80/20-regel onder de loep

Misdaad is ongelijk verdeeld. Op sommige hotspots is het elke dag raak, terwijl andere plaatsen jarenlang verschoond blijven van misdaad. Die ongelijkheid kunnen we in beeld brengen met een Lorenz-curve en kwantificeren met een Gini-coëfficiënt. Dat gaat echter niet goed als er meer locaties zijn dan misdrijven. Wim Bernasco & Wouter Steenbeek laten in onderstaande tekst zien waarom, en bieden een oplossing. De oplossing berust op de gedachte dat we een geobserveerde mate van (on)gelijkheid moeten relateren aan de maximaal haalbare mate van gelijkheid bij een gegeven aantal misdrijven en ruimtelijke eenheden.

Wim Bernasco is senior onderzoeker bij het NSCR en bijzonder hoogleraar ‘Ruimtelijke analyse van criminaliteit’ bij de afdeling Ruimtelijke Economie van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hij bestudeert ruimtelijke aspecten van criminaliteit, waaronder reisgedrag en doelwitkeuze van daders. Ook verricht hij onderzoek naar situationele oorzaken van criminaliteit.

Wim maakt deel uit van de Clusters Criminal Events en Ruimtelijk-temporeel.
