Peter van der Laan appointed as interim director NSCR

The board of the Institutes Organisation of NWO has appointed Prof. Peter van der Laan as interim director of the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). He replaces Prof. Catrien Bijleveld until her definitive successor has been appointed. Catrien Bijleveld has been appointed a member of the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR). She will continue to work at NSCR on a part-time basis.

Peter van der Laan studied special education at Leiden University. In 1991, he gained his doctorate for a thesis entitled Experimenteren met alternatieve sancties voor jeugdigen (Experimenting with alternative sanctions for juveniles). For many years, he has carried out research in the area of child protection, juvenile deliquency and (youth) criminal law. From 1981 to 1998, he held various positions at the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC) of the Ministry of Justice and Security. In 1998 and 1999, he was a senior research fellow at the Dartington Social Research Unit in the county of Devon and visiting professor Social Work and Probation at the University of Exeter (UK).

Van der Laan has worked at NSCR since 1999. He combines this with a professorship by special appointment in Probation and Parole at the Faculty of Law, VU Amsterdam. He is also a member of the Social Sciences Council (SWR) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (RSJ).

About prof. dr. Peter van der Laan


Peter van der Laan is director a.i. of the NSCR since August 2019. He studied special education at the University of Leiden. In 1991, he received his PhD from the VU University Amsterdam for a thesis entitled ‘ Experimenteren met alternatieve sancties voor jeugdigen’ (Experimenting with alternative sanctions for juveniles).
Until 1999, he worked in various positions at the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC) of the Dutch Ministry of Justice. Since then, he is a senior researcher at the NSCR.
From 2005 until 2012 he was extraordinary professor of Social Work at the University of Amsterdam. Among other things, he set up Forensic Orthopedagogy, the first master of its kind.
In the summer of 2009, he was appointed for two days as a professor Probation and Parole at the Faculty of Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). He is also director of the Amsterdam Law and Behavior Institute (A-LAB), the interdisciplinary research institute of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, that houses collaborative research of VU and NSCR in the area of security, justice and behavior.
For years, he is engaged in research in the field of child protection, juvenile delinquency, (youth) probation and (youth) criminal law, with a special focus on implementation and effectiveness of criminal justice interventions.
He is a member of the Council for Penal Administration and Youth Protection (RSJ), of the Social Sciences Council (SWR) of the Royal Academy of Sciences, and of the Board of Trustees of the Altra Foundation in Amsterdam.

Peter is a member of the Life-course Cluster, the Sanctions Cluster and the Empirical Legal Studies Cluster.
