Genetic influences on criminal careers

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a Veni grant of 250,000 euros to dr. Steve van de Weijer for his research project . With a Veni grant from NWO, highly promising young researchers can further elaborate their own ideas during a period of three years.
1056 researchers submitted a proposal for a Veni grant to NWO. These proposals were assessed by means of peer review by external experts from the disciplines concerned. Research proposals submitted were subsequently assessed within the NWO science divisions by broadly composed committees and this assessment included personal interviews with the applicants. Together with Vidi and Vici, Veni is part of the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme of NWO.
Criminologists usually explain criminal careers from life events, such as (parental) divorce and employment. However, genetic factors can influence both criminal behaviour and the occurrence of such environmental factors. Steve van de Weijer will examine the extent to which criminal behaviour can be explained from either genetic factors or environmental factors.
